A government bill proposing to renew the state of emergency for another three months was submitted to Parliament on Monday. The proposal was also the main topic of yesterday's National Security Council (MGK) meeting. The bill will be discussed in the General Assembly this week and the state of emergency will most likely be prolonged for a fourth time.

Meanwhile, the resolution to extend the service time of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in Lebanon as part of a joint operation called the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the MINUSMA missions in Mali and the Central African Republic were approved in Parliament yesterday.

The length of the TSK's service within the UNIFIL was extended to December 31, 2018 yesterday in a parliamentary decision that aims to ensure international peace and security while helping the Lebanese government restore order in the region as part of the U.N. operation.

The resolution also envisages the participation of the Turkish military in the U.N.'s MINUSMA missions in Mali and the Central African Republic.

UNIFIL was established by the U.N. Security Council in 1978 and, according to the U.N., the aim of the UNIFIL is: "To confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and to restore international peace and security while assisting the Lebanese government, ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area."

After the war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, the mission of UNIFIL was expanded by the U.N. Security Council to include monitoring of the cessation of hostilities by local forces and the extension of humanitarian aid to civilian populations.

As of June 1, 2017, 40 countries continue to contribute to UNIFIL with 10,583 soldiers serving in active duty. Turkey, one of the biggest contributing countries to UNIFIL, has 36 troops stationed in Lebanon as part of the operation.
