The Foreign Ministry issued a travel warning on Wednesday for citizens traveling to areas threatened by Hurricane Maria.

In statement, the foreign ministry warned Turkish citizens planning to travel to the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, noting that the hurricane has regained Category 5 strength.

The ministry said that citizens should not travel to the aforementioned regions, while those who are in the affected regions should take all necessary precautions and follow the announcements of local authorities to ensure their safety.

"Our embassies in Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas and Washington, and the Consulate General in Miami are sharing up-to-date information about the hurricane, obtained from local authorities," the ministry said, adding that they can also contact the call center when necessary.

A category 5 storm, Hurricane Maria is considered to be an extremely dangerous one, tearing off roofs and doors, toppling cell towers and unleashing heavy flooding as it left at least nine people dead in its wake across the Caribbean.
