Turkish engineers design bio-sensor to analyze cancer treatments

Scientists working for the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) informatics research department, known as BİLGEM, and Gebze Technical University (GTÜ) designed a bio-sensor device which supports analysis of cancer-treating medications. The device carries out pre-biological activity search tests using a new scanning technique. The device will be used in various medical analyses at the GTÜ's Chemical Analysis - Biological Activity Test Laboratory, focusing on how cancer medication affects patients. Speaking at a ceremony for the device, Chancellor of GTÜ Professor Haluk Görgün said the device is a success story about an academic study producing a useable device. Professor Görgün said that the bio-sensor was co-designed by academics from the chemistry department with TÜBİTAK researchers, aiming to develop new medications for cancer, a serious global problem, and reduce the damage caused by cancer medication. "The bio-sensor detects the characteristics of cancer medication which causes damage in patients' DNAs," Professor Görgün said.TÜBİTAK's BİLGEM National Research Institute of Electronics And Cryptology Biology and Security Practices Unit Supervisor Yıldız Uludağ, the director of the electro-chemical bio-sensor project, said: "This is a device which has been domestically produced using the national infrastructure of BİLGEM's National Research Institute of Electronics And Cryptology. Currently, the device is ready for mass production and sale for R&D purposes by BİLGEM. Those who are interested in device can contact BİLGEM and purchase the device."
