Genetic coding in eastern provinces aims to discover new bird species

The very first genetic coding of birds in Turkey has taken place in the Aras River Valley located between the borders of the Kars and Iğdır provinces. North Nature Association President Associate Professor Çağan Şekercioğlu said they succeeded in discovering new genetic codes in birds that have never been written down in scientific literature. Stressing the importance of the Aras River Valley, Şekercioğlu said the valley is an important wet land because of the genetic variety between bird species. "DNA coding enables scientists to differentiate one species from another in terms of genetics. Among the 33 bird species we have studied, we discovered new genetic codes in 26 out of 33 species. The study also showed us that the bird species in Turkey are genetically related to the birds living in Eastern Europe, Western Russia and Central Asia. There are at least 230 species that we have not yet studied. If we can found our study, we might be able to discover new bird species and hundreds of new genetic codes.
