Excessive exposure to screens hinders child development

Televisions, computers, cell phones and games affect children from when they are babies. Children have to interact with the digital world in situations like teaching with smart boards or tablets, lessons on codification and repetitions with computers.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), associate professor Dr. Osman Abalı, who specializes on children's mental health, attention deficit disorders and autism, said that this intense interaction with the digital world causes many problems in kids. Abalı said that such exposure can be the cause of language development disorders, social perception deformity, atrophy of emotional intelligence and empathy, eye-hand coordination, muscle development deficiency, learning disorders and attention deficit.

He said that the basic reason why children tend to play digital games is entertainment and wasting time. Abalı reported that there would be no addiction if parents took the time to play with their children.

Families should get used to spending time together. To maintain the system in the family, they can increase the quality of their shared time by adding activities and games independent of technology. It is not possible to get rid of game addiction without a strong family system.

If we spend quality time together with our children, they won't prefer screens over us, he said. Screens and digital tools are definitely harmful until three years old. Children aged between three and six should interact for an hour. While kids aged between seven and 12 should spend two hours on interactions, while children aged 12 and over shouldn't exceed two or three hours.
