Berlin - Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has gone on trial on tax evasion charges in a case that could send the German football great to prison.Bavarian prosecutors charged Hoeness last year after he reported himself to authorities over a previously undeclared Swiss bank account.Munich's Sueddeutsche Zeitung, citing the still-secret indictment, reported last month that prosecutors believe the 62-year-old Hoeness dodged paying up to 3.5 million euros ($4.9 million) in tax.Pleas were not entered as the Munich state court trial opened Monday, as per usual in the German system. A verdict is expected Thursday.The Bayern president, who was part of West Germany's 1974 World Cup-winning squad, faces punishment ranging from a fine to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
