Turkish Olympic champion wants doping ban cut

A Turkish runner stripped of her Olympic 1,500-meter title for blood doping wants her ban cut for helping a World Anti-Doping Agency inquiry into corruption in athletics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it will hear Aslı Çakır Alptekin's appeal on July 4. CAS says Alptekin wants her eight-year ban to be stopped "based on alleged substantial assistance provided to WADA."A WADA-appointed inquiry team claimed in January that two sons of former IAAF president Lamine Diack tried to blackmail Alptekin after she won gold at the 2012 London Olympics. The inquiry report said Papa Diack tried to extort money from Alptekin, who got a 500,000 euro ($545,000) bonus from Turkey's government. Alptekin agreed with the IAAF last year to be banned through January 2021.
