Sailing comes to Samsun for Deaflympics place

Apart from hosting 21 different disciplines, the Deaflympics 2017 in Samsun has also welcomed a few sports that are hopeful of earning a place in the next meet. To promote sailing, one of the aspiring sports, a team from Poland traveled to the Black Sea province and held some publicity events at the Samsun Sailing Club from July 23 to July 26. Tomasz Guminski, a member of the Polish team said that he has been involved in sailing since he was eight, and has 18 years of experience as an instructor. The Polish sailor and his team that includes his father and children have traveled to different countries including Germany, Russia, and the U.K. to promote sailing in the hearing impaired community. But, their main goal is to get sailing included in the Deaflympics.

"In sailing, coordination is very important. To overcome any potential communication issues, we have developed a technique that uses some 800 words or instructions in the sign language," Guminski said.

"Using the sign language we can communicate from afar. To follow the rules in sailing we developed the technique. By using it, you can easily communicate onboard. Our book already includes all the terms. You may not be able to make a sound or be heard from far away, but your hands will do the work," he added. He said they were now in contact with 15 countries and wanted sailing to become a part of the next Deaflympics.
