Turkish national karate team win gold in Deaflympics


With the 23rd Summer Deaflympics drawing to an end this Sunday, Turkey's national team has made their country extremely proud.

In the men's team kata, Burak Mert Can, Fatih Çiçek and Mehmet Ali Sapmaz defeated Ukraine in the finals to win gold.

Meanwhile, in the men's 400m semi-finals, Yasin Süzen ranked first both in his series and overall, qualifying for the finals.

In the women's shot put, the last Deaflympics champion Ivana Kristoficova from Slovakia defended her title with a distance of 15.30 meters, just 3 centimeters short of her world record. In the badminton men's singles round of 64, Turkey's Barış Mehmet Ural defeated Japan's Masaaki Numakura and Doğukan Yılmaz defeated Bulgaria's Nikola Tyankov, both 2-1, advancing to the round of 32.

Turkey's women's deaf football team lost 4-0 to Russia in their last match of the group and that meant that the team lost any medal chances.

In the golf men's competition, German Allen John won the gold medal, defeating Britain's Paul Daniel Waring in the finals.

Another British golfer, Steven Cafferty, defeated Danish golfer Lasse Emil Nielsen to win the bronze medal.

In the women's golf competition, American Kavlin Yost defeated Indian Diksha Dagar to become the champion.

In the wrestling 61kg finals, Russian Askar Askarov defeated Ukrainian Andrii Kambur to win the gold medal.

Turkish wrestler Mehmet Ali Yiğit lost to Kambur in the round of 16, but won his repechage match and faced Kyrgyz wrestler Almazbek Isakov to win the bronze medal.

In the 70kg finals, Russian Vasiliy Strekalovskiy defeated Iranian Hossein Derikvand to win the gold medal.

Turkish wrestler Ercan Gör was defeated by Derikvand in the quarter-finals but won the repechage match and defeated Armenian wrestler Zhora Grigoryan to win the bronze medal.

In the 86kg finals, Russian Kazbek Khugaev defeated the Ukrainian Anatolii Chervonenko to win the gold medal.

Dursun Gözel lost to Chervonenko in the quarter-finals but won his repechage match against Bulgarian Angel Tsenov to win the bronze medal.

In the women's 200m backstroke qualifiers, Olga Kliuchnikova improved her world record by 2.48 seconds to 2:22.72.

In the men's 4x100m freestyle, the Russian team of Ilya Sarykin, Andrei Zhivaev, Vitalii Obotin and Miron Denisov broke the world record with a time of 3:28.49 to become the champions.In the women's 50m butterfly, Russian Alena Alexeeva broke the Deaflympics record with a time of 28.30.

In the men's 200m individual medley, Russian Vitalii Obotin broke the games' record with a time of 2:04.53.

Lastly, in the men's 50m freestyle, Russian Andrei Zhivaev broke the games' record with a time of 23.44.
