World Weightlifting Championship kicks off in Ashgabat

World Weightlifting Championship will begin today in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Ten female and seven male weightlifters from Turkey will participate in the competition that runs till Nov. 10.

A total of 800 foreign athletes and 1,500 representatives, including judicial brigades and journalists, from 100 countries – nine African, 38 European, 29 Asian, 15 American and nine Oceanian countries – will join the event.

Turkey Weightlifting Federation Chairman Tamer Taşpınar said, "We do not have huge expectations for the world championship. Our athletes will participate to gain more experience. We have two substitute athletes. Our main target is to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where we want to win medals."
