Lamine Yamal became Barcelona’s youngest-ever captain at 19 years and 58 days when the Spanish champions routed Feyenoord 5-1 in their Champions League opener Wednesday.
Yamal inherited the armband from first-choice captain Raphinha after the Brazilian was substituted in the 71st minute, becoming the youngest player to captain Barcelona in the club’s history.
The milestone came just minutes before Yamal added to an outstanding individual performance, curling a free kick into the net in the 77th minute to put Barcelona 4-1 ahead at Spotify Camp Nou.
Bojan Krkić had held the previous record after captaining Barcelona at age 20 during a 2010 Copa del Rey match against Ceuta. Yamal, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, surpassed that mark more than 15 years later.
The captaincy was a natural progression for Yamal, who had already been named one of Barcelona’s five captains for the 2026-27 season. Raphinha and Pedri were selected as the first two captains, while Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and Yamal completed the group.
With Garcia suspended, De Jong sidelined by injury and Pedri substituted in the second half, Raphinha was the last senior captain on the field. When he left the game, the armband passed to Yamal.
The teenager quickly made his mark.
Yamal had already assisted Raphinha for Barcelona’s third-minute opener before helping the hosts maintain control of a match they dominated. Raphinha scored again in the 57th minute, while Karim Adeyemi added Barcelona’s second in the 22nd.
Yamal then scored from the free kick six minutes after taking the armband before setting up substitute Gabriel Jesus for Barcelona’s fifth in the 85th minute. Sem Steijn scored Feyenoord’s consolation in the 82nd.
Yamal finished with a goal and two assists, underlining why Barcelona have entrusted him with an increasingly prominent role despite his age.
Born July 13, 2007, in Esplugues de Llobregat, Yamal has been breaking records since emerging from La Masia. His rise has accelerated from academy prospect to first-team regular, Spain international and now one of Barcelona’s formal leaders.
The captaincy milestone also carried a symbolic significance. Yamal had only recently joined the club’s leadership group, and the armband was handed to him by Raphinha, one of the players who had helped guide him into a senior role.
After receiving the captaincy, Yamal scored within minutes and celebrated the goal toward the Barcelona bench, sharing the moment with Raphinha.
His achievement, however, did not make him the youngest captain in Champions League history.
That record belongs to Ruben Neves, who captained Porto at 18 years and 221 days. Matthijs de Ligt and Jude Bellingham are among the other teenagers who have worn the armband in the competition.
