The Assad regime and opposition delegations were invited along with the United Nation's special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, to meetings in Astana on February 15-16, Kazakhstan'sForeign Ministry said Saturday.The talks in the Kazakh capital will discuss the implementation and consolidation of the ceasefire in Syria, the ministry added. Representatives of Jordan and the United States are also invited to the meeting.The negotiations - brokered by Turkey, Russia and Iran - began last month with the aim of solidifying a broad ceasefire, in effect since late December.The three countries have mapped out the areas they believe are controlled by the moderate opposition forces included in the truce and the terrorist groups that are not.The ceasefire has reduced fighting in much of Syria, which has been devastated in recent years by a civil war with multiple fronts.The Syrian conflict, which started with demonstrations against the Assad regime in March 2011, spiraled into a four-way civil war that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives and driven about half the pre-war population of 22 million from their homes.
