Rights watchdog calls to help Syrian refugees stranded at Algeria-Morocco border

A rights watchdog called Friday to find a solution for Syrian refugees stranded at the Algerian-Moroccan border.

For nearly 40 days, a group of Syrian refugees, including children and a pregnant woman, had been stuck in an area between Morocco and Algeria trying to survive in "tragic and inhumane conditions," the Arab Organization for Human Rights said in a statement.

The Morocco-based NGO called on Algerian and Moroccan authorities and international migration and asylum institutions to facilitate the refugees' exit from the border area as soon as possible.

The plight of those trapped "is serious enough for the authorities of the two countries to speak at a table to find a solution," the statement said.

More than 50 Syrian refugees had been trapped at the border area near the Moroccan city of Figuig and Algeria's Beni Ounif since April 17.
