Russia hopes that the U.S. will create a team for bilateral discussion on cyber security, the Russian president's special envoy for international cooperation in information security, Andrey Krutskikh said Thursday.

"We have an understanding that this is a priority and an important issue," Krutskikh told Russian agency TASS at the International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues.

Krutskikh emphasized that the two countries should hold a discussion on cyber security, and that the U.S. should make a political decision to establish a representative delegation.

"I think that in the end, the US administration will manage to overcome domestic opposition and form a team for a serious and practical dialogue with us on this issue. There cannot be any other way," the Russian president's envoy said.

Giving the example of recent WannaCry cyber-attack, Krutskikh said, "Uniting efforts of such countries as Russia and the United States in the fight against such threats is vital and is a priority."

WannaCry ransomware, which started to sweep the globe May 12 and has infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 nations. It threatens to lock out victims who have not paid a sum of $300 to $600 within one week of infection.
