Turkey expands 'halal certification' to boost tourism sector


The Turkish Standards Institution (TSE) has issued "Halal Food Certification" since 2011, and has so far given "Halal" certifications to 327 firms in 18 different product lines, in collaboration with the Presidency of Religious Affairs of Turkey.Continuing investment in diversification of the tourism sector, Turkey aims to be a favored holiday destination for tourists from Muslim countries, by supporting "Halal Certification." Conducting research for halal certification regarding food products and places serving food, teams of specialists also provide services from firms operating abroad.After applying to TSE, a team of specialists from the Presidency of Religious Affairs and TSE arrive at the production site to make examinations.During this process, the product or the institution requested to be certified with the TSE standards is examined in accordance with Islamic standards. Products or the institutions found suitable are granted TSE's Halal Food Certification. Thus far, 327 firms have been given halal certification. Until recently, only hotels could obtain halal certifications. However, following recent studies, other institutions can now also obtain halal certification. Another important topic within the scope of halal certifications is the studies conducted on cosmetics. The products which can receive halal cosmetic certification cannot contain animal products which are prohibited in Islam or include any substances hazardous to human health made from such animals.
