Ukrainian tourists double in July despite coup attempt
While the number of tourists coming to Turkey from European countries decreased in July compared to the previous year, Ukrainian tourists are increasingly visiting Turkey despite the failed coup attempt on July 15, a number double from the previous year.
The number of Ukrainian tourists to visit Antalya went up from 59,867 in July 2015 to 120,382 in July, marking an increase of 101 percent, a year-on-year increase followed by Israeli tourists at 86 percent. The number of tourists from Azerbaijan increased 40 percent, Albanian tourists by 24 percent, and Romanian tourists up by 2 percent, while the number of tourists from other European countries decreased.
The number of Ukrainian tourists visiting Muğla, compared to the previous year, increased by 126 percent, from 10,882 in July 2015 to 24,680 in July 2016. Ukrainian tourists visiting Istanbul decreased, dropping from 22,740 in July 2015, to 20,858 in July 2016.
A continuous increase was observed in the number of Ukrainian tourists visiting Turkey during the first seven months of 2016. While the number of Ukrainian tourists visiting Antalya throughout 2015 was 168,378, this number reached 316,644 during the first seven months of 2016, an increase of 88 percent.
Officials from the Culture and Tourism Ministry say the number of Ukrainian tourists in 2015 was 700,000 and expect to reach one million by the end of 2016.
