Russian tourists to purchase tickets, tour packages in rubles

Denizbank General Manager Hakan Ateş announced that the bank will launch a new sales model for a flight ticket and tourism package regarding the Russian market, adding that they wanted to complete the regulation by the end of this tourism season. This model will enable Russian tourists to purchase tickets and tour packages in installments using fixed ruble prices.

Ateş, who accompanied Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Hüseyin Yayman at the Moscow International Travel and Tourism (MITT) 2017 fair, one of the biggest tourism fairs that determine the route of tourists in Russia, said they were the only bank to open a booth at the fair to support the country's tourism sector.

Ateş stated that with this model launched in collaboration with Sberbank's subsidiary Cetelem, Russian tourists will be able to purchase tickets and tour packages in installments using fixed ruble prices.

Noting that there is a currency risk in the current payment mechanism as well as value date, meaning day losses, and finally the loss of exchange rate, namely the ruble and dollar, in conversion to the Turkish lira, Ateş said that the four major tour operators, Pegas, Odeon, Anex and Thesis, each bring in close to one million tourists, which adds up to four million tourists, a record figure in 2014.

"They can accept rubles in accordance with the deals they make with the airline companies, such as Turkish airlines and Atlas Air, who carry Russian tourists. When they bring us rubles, we can convert them into any currency they want on the same day," Ateş added.

Pointing out that there are only two ways in which this conversion can be made in terms of deferred payment transactions, Ateş said the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) is currently working on a rediscount loan in ruble terms, which will be announced soon.

According to Ateş, with this arrangement, the hotel owner or tour operator will receive loans in ruble, and then they will be able to pay their ruble collections, and when the loan is paid off, the problem will come to an end.

"So, it's a matter of conversion. Therefore, we expect this from an institutional point of view," he said.

Indicating that in terms of households, Sberbank has accounts for 143 million people, over 100 million credit and bank cards, Ateş said when tourists purchase a tour from there, the method being worked on right now is to take a consumer financing loan in the form of a quick loan and make it deferrable.
