Largest ground mosaic found in Izmir
While the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality’s demolition efforts in the historical Izmir Agora continue, the historical relics found under the demolished homes continues to surprise.
The mosaic constitutes nearly half of a 900 square meter area which has been expropriated by the Metropolitan Municipality marks a first for Izmir and the Eastern Anatolian region in terms of its size and level of preservation.
Releasing information regarding the ongoing work on the mosaic, Excavation Director Assistant Professor Dr. Akın Ersoy states: "This appears to be the largest ground mosaic finding in Western Anatolia. This is a structure we can describe as being a cultural palace and meeting hall, built in the 200's. On the one hand our colleagues are working to reveal the mosaic while at the same time continuing to do restoration work."
