Travel ban for coup commander

On April 4th, 2012, the trial begins for the case on former Chief of General Staff and the Republic’s seventh President Kenan Evren’s and former Air Forces Commander retired General Tahsin Şahinkaya’s involvement in the September coup.

The Ankara 12th High Criminal Court, where the case will be tried, has issued an international travel ban on both Evren and Şahinkaya.

The announcement released by the court on Wednesday stated, "In consideration of the sentences requested for the suspects due to the nature of the crime, the court sees fit that the defendant's testimonies be taken in court."

According to the court announcement, should Evren and Şahinkaya not arrive to the court on the date and time of the indictment's hearing, police will retain the right to use force to bring the defendants to court.
