Turkey has been drawing international interest for a series of successful face transplants and soon will be conducting tissue transplants for foreigners.
The Ministry of Health has set the fees for foreigners to obtain a face transplant at 210,000 liras. The Ministry of Health has begun to place increasing importance on medical tourism and as a result has established a fee list for foreigners who come to Turkey to receive medical treatments. Accordingly, the price for face and arm transplants, have now been added to the list. With social security coverage, Turkish nationals are able to obtain tissue (arm-leg-face) transplants free of charge, whereas for foreigners the price has been set to 210,000 liras.
Dr. İrfan Şencan, the General Manager of Medical Services for the Ministry of Health says that the fact that it is theoretically possible for a foreigner to receive a face transplant in Turkey was why they added the fee to their price list for procedures. When the first face transplant in Turkey was done at the Akdeniz University, Social Security reimbursed 46,000 liras.
