Nostalgic Tram which is the indispensable sight of İstiklal Avenue celebrated its 101st birthday. The Nostalgic Tram was restored by Istanbul Electric Tramway and Tunnel Establishments (IETT) in 1990.During the celebration which started in front of İETT General Directorate on Tünel Square under the snow, the trams were decorated and the passengers were offered salep (a Turkish drink). The passengers were also welcomed with surprise gifts such as book marks and souvenir pillows. General Manager of İETT Mümin Kahveci noted that besides the birthday of the Nostalgic Tram, it was also the day marking the anniversary of engagement of tram no: 115. Kahveci reminded that tram no: 115 was one of the first trams trundled along Galata Bridge and he said, "We restored tram no.115 remaining faithful to its original and we present it to the use of Istanbulites."During the journey with the Nostalgic Tram, a live concert with nostalgic songs accompanied the passengers. As the tram passed through the İstiklal Avenue, people competed with each other to take the best shot of the tram with their cameras. Tram no. 115 was manufactured in 1914 and it is one of the first electric trams belonging to İETT. The red colored tram were mostly used at routes in Maçka, Kurtuluş and Şişli and occasionally it offered its service in Fatih, Edirnekapı and Yedikule districts. When it embarked on its first on its first journey, it passed through the Galata Bridge which connects Eminönü and Galata. It is the same model with the Nostalgic Tram that worls between Taksim and Tünel. Tram no. 115 transferred to the Asian side of Istanbul in 1961 after operating many years in European side. It continued to carry people from one place to another until 1966. When trams were dropped out of service in 1966, it was transferred to İkitelli Garage. When nostalgic trams began to operate once again from Taksim to Tünel in 1989, the trams were restored remaining faithful to their originals. Tram no.115 was restored with a team of eight people at the tram workshop in Taksim under the supervision of Nusret Alperöz, Oğuz Tangür and Güven Otman and with the contribution of İETT. Although the tram no.115 was a scrap, all mechanical components, wooden parts, motor and roof were changed and the restoration works completed in a year. Tram no. 115 began operating previous year in the memory of 100th anniversary of nostalgic trams.
