Another woman found burned to death

The body of a woman apparently burned to death was discovered in western Turkey on Sunday, triggering fears of another act of violence toward a woman only two weeks after a university student's charred body was found in Mersin in southern Turkey.

The body, which was almost entirely burned, was found by the owner of an olive grove in the Akhisar district of the western Turkish province of Manisa. The remains were in a shack in the grove.

Security forces launched an investigation into the incident while a piece of cloth found near the body, likely belonging to the victim, is currently the only evidence to detect her identity. Police sources said the woman was between the ages of 20 and 49. Turkish media reported the woman's hands were tied behind her back.

Suspecting a domestic violence case, police checked all women in Manisa and Akhisar who applied for police protection after suffering from violence, but found all were safe. Nine days ago, the burned body of Özgecan Aslan, a 20-year-old university student, was found in her hometown of Mersin, three days after she went missing.

Aslan was stabbed, had her hands cut off and was burned, allegedly when she resisted a rape attempt. Three men, a minibus driver who confessed to killing the university student, his father and a friend who helped the man to dispose of the body were arrested. Aslan's murder has sparked a public outcry against violence against women in Turkey.Security forces launched an investigation into the incident while a piece of cloth found near the body, likely belonging to the victim, is currently the only evidence to detect her identity.
