Parallel parking trouble for prospective drivers

Obtaining a driver's license is more difficult than in the past due to the introduction of new eligibility regulations, but one thing that continues to vex student drivers is parallel parking.More than half of student drivers that fail to pass the driving exam required to obtain a license do so because they cannot properly parallel park, experts said.İsmail Yılmaz, who heads a confederation of driving schools across Turkey, said most students fail because they have to park the car in reverse in only one attempt and called on authorities to give them a second chance. "This is not a significant fault that would cause a fatal accident if you fail," he said.Yılmaz stressed that driving exams monitored by state-appointed inspectors "truly ensured that only those genuinely competent to drive a car" pass the test, but calls for a relaxation of rules. "I think it would be better if student drivers are allowed to try again if they fail their first attempt at parallel parking," he said. He added that even the most skilled drivers often fail at parallel parking, and it was quite normal for rookie drivers to nail it in only one try. "Student drivers are usually nervous in the exams and because of anxiety, they frequently fail. If they are given another try, they could be more confident," he said.Melih Öğüt, a driving instructor, said parallel parking is the most difficult subject for his students. "We devote most of our time to teaching them how to parallel park rather than focusing on other subjects," he said.Getting a driving license was incredibly easy in Turkey in the past, with many skipping driving exams altogether by bribing officials. But in recent years, Turkey, a country where more than 3,500 people die every year due to accidents mainly caused by reckless drivers, introduced new regulations. These include better inspection of driving schools and the planned introduction of a new type of driving license that will have credits that will be reduced if the driver violates traffic safety rules and eventually be revoked. Last but not least, driving license exams will be made more difficult. Apart from parallel parking, drivers are unable to get the license if they fail to drive the car uphill without stalling.
