Police: Attack on Fener player was accident
Police said on Wednesday that an armed attack on Fenerbahçe player Mehmet Topal on Tuesday was actually "an accident" and stray bullets fired from a far-away distance without a specific target hit Topal's car. Topal and fellow teammate Mert Uygar Zeybek were traveling in Topal's armored car in Istanbul's Sancaktepe district when bullets hit the car. Both men escaped uninjured.
The Istanbul football club was quick to describe the incident as "a terror attack" on Tuesday. The incident came after an April attack on a bus carrying Fenerbahçe players in northern Turkey. The team's bus driver was injured in that attack while the passengers managed to stop the bus before it crashed after the driver lost consciousness. The Turkish football league was suspended for one week after the April attack.
Police are now looking for who fired the shots that hit Topal's car.
