US embassy to move to new location

The United States Embassy in Ankara will be moved to another district in the capital in the near future. A plot was purchased in Çukurambar, a developing district of Ankara that has been transformed from a slum to a posh neighborhood in recent years. The new embassy building will be constructed on a 37,000 square meters area. Plans to move the embassy from Kavaklıdere where it served from for years was accelerated after an attack on the building in February 2013 by a suicide bomber from the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) terrorist organization. The heavily guarded compound surrounded by thick concrete walls was not damaged in the attack but a Turkish security guard was killed when the suicide bomber blew himself up at an entrance. The U.S. Consulate in Istanbul was also target of another attack by the DHKP-C earlier this month.
