A recent survey revealed that Turkish vacationers prefer the United States as their holiday destination. According to the survey conducted by DORinsight, a Turkish research and analyst company, 11.6 percent of participants choose the United States as their preferred vacation spot, followed by Italy with 10.4 percent, the Maldives with 6.1 percent and Spain with 5.6 percent.

More than 8,000 people responded to the survey, which also showed that Pakistan, Nigeria, Iraq and Algeria were the least desired destinations for Turkish travelers.

In addition, 46 percent reported that they determined their holiday destination based off the area's natural beauty.

Another 24 percent selected "the most recommended" place, while 23 percent said they considered affordable cost the most important criteria. 42 percent of survey participants said they would feel "safe" if they had more than $2,000 while on a one-week vacation.

According to figures gathered by Turkish Statistical Agency (TurkStat), more than 10 million foreigners vacationed in Turkey, which has a population of 77 million, during the first quarter of 2015. In domestic tourism, people seem to prefer visiting relatives. Due to the rising unaffordability of vacations, only 8.8 percent traveled "for fun and rest" in the first quarter of this year.

Turkey's northeastern neighbor, Georgia, allows Turkish citizens to enter the country without a visa and was one of the most vacationed places by Turks last year. The United States ranked in the bottom ten of places travelled to by Turks. Statistics collected by the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) counted over 119,000 Turkish nationals who visited the United States in 2014.
