Deadlock continues in TV watchdog election

The new election of the Supreme Board of Radio and Television (RTÜK), the state-run media watchdog tasked with regulating visual media and radio, was once again postponed as the political diversity of its members put the election of its new president in a deadlock. RTÜK members had voted in eight rounds since July but since all members have equal votes and everyone voted for the political party he or she represented, no president was elected - reflecting disagreement between the parties that led to a repeat of elections after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) lost the majority in Parliament and opposition parties rejected a coalition government. Yesterday's round was postponed to Sept. 9 while a member of the watchdog representing the Republican People's Party (CHP) resigned to become a candidate in the Nov. 1 elections. He will be replaced with a new CHP representative.
