Turkey's first underwater museum, which includes 110 pieces of sculptures positioned on the seabed, 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Turkey's southern resort town of Side, opened on Saturday.Side Underwater Museum, established by the efforts of the Chamber of Shipping and Western Mediterranean Development Agency (BAKA), near the antique city of Side, located in Manavgat district of Antalya province, includes pieces featuring various civilizations that lived in Anatolia.The inauguration ceremony of the museum was carried out under the sea and on a boat.Speaking at the ceremony, Head of Antalya Branch of Chamber of Shipping, Bekir İnanç Kendiroğlu, stated that three other underground museums will be inaugurated in Antalya center and Kemer and other Antalya districts to improve diving tourism in Turkey and Antalya.Kendiroğlu said that despite the fact that it was under construction, the museum was visited by 30,000 divers in 2015 and they aim to host 100,000 divers next year. He added they aim to increase the number to 500,000 to one million divers per year.The area will be closed to marine traffic and everyone with a diving licence can dive in the area for free, Kendiroğlu said.
