A 65-year-old woman shot her 25-year-old daughter-in-law on Sunday at around 8 p.m. local time in the western province of İzmir, media agencies reported on Thursday. The two had been allegedly constantly arguing. N.H. reportedly shot her daughter-in-law B.H. three times, in her armpit, right shoulder, and abdominal cavity. The young woman has been put into intensive care, while the mother-in-law was arrested following her testimony. The young woman was reported to still have a risk of death.The police confiscated the gun the old woman used, and determined that it belonged to her 70-year-old husband. In Turkey, mothers-in-law ["kaynana" in Turkish] are usually said to take on an authoritative role in the family. The belief that 'no one is quite good enough for her son' is said to be a dominant belief for many mothers-in-law in the country. They are said to be suspicious of their daughters-in-law, expecting perfection from them, which usually leads to a tension in the family.
