A baker had a "miracle" escape Saturday afternoon when he was hit in the head by PKK terrorist gunfire while he was working in his shop in southeast Turkey.

The 24-year-old, identified only as H.Ç., was working at the bakery in Şırnak, a city close to Turkey's border with Iraq and Syria, when he was nearly killed.

Dr. Turgut Topal, who treated him at Şırnak State Hospital, said: "It is a miracle that he is alive. If the bullet had hit him a centimeter lower, he would have been dead."

H.C. was injured during a security operation against the PKK - listed as a terror organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU - to arrest the terrorists and remove the barriers.

He told Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) that he was working when he heard gunshots. "I am fine now, thanks to Allah," he said. "I am just working at a bake shop. Why do they attack us?"

The PKK resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July, since when more than 350 members of the security forces have been killed.
