28,000 chickens perish as ventilation system breaks down on poultry farm

Approximately 28,000 chickens suffocated to death late Wednesday on a poultry farm located in Turkey's northwestern Sakarya province after the ventilation system broke down.

The ventilation system fans, which provide air to the enclosed section of the farm, stopped working due to a computer error.

The owner of the farm arrived at the scene on early Thursday and found that all animals had died.

Units from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock carried out an investigation and prepared a damage identification report.

The dead chickens were buried in pits with bulldozers.

The damage was reported to be around 200,000 Turkish lira ($69,000).

In a separate incident on late Tuesday, approximately 8,000 chickens perished in eastern Malatya district as a truck carrying the animals caught on fire.
