The democracy rallies that became a staple of summer nights since the coup attempt on July 15 by Gülenist military officers, after a call by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will continue until Wednesday. Speaking at a spectacular democracy rally in Istanbul on Sunday, Erdoğan called for the public to "end the rallies" on Wednesday. After news of the coup attempt broke out, the president and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım urged the nation to "claim the streets and squares." Erdoğan said Sunday's rally will "crown" the democracy rallies attended by thousands all across the country since July 15. However, just as he was leaving the stage without mentioning an official declaration of the end of "democracy watch," Erdoğan asked the citizens to continue for two more days.The rallies are solemn as well as cheerful events, where people carrying Turkish flags and photos of their "commander-in-chief" Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who the public credits with fighting off the coup by mobilizing the people to stay in major squares. While singing patriotic songs, crowds have celebrated public resistance and commemorated the hundreds of civilians and security personnel who died while confronting the coup plotters.Sunday night's rallies were an occasion for people across the country to watch the grand rally at Yenikapı Square via giant screens erected at rally sites. Major squares in every city from Edirne in the northwest, near the border with Bulgaria, to Diyarbakır in the southeast, hosted rallies where people denounce the coup attempt, chanting slogans and waving Turkish flags in support of democracy.
