F-16 fighter jet crashes in southeastern Turkey


An F-16 fighter jet crashed near an airport in the southeastern city of Diyarbakır on Monday while preparing to land after a training flight, military sources said.

The plane crashed around 7:30 p.m. when the jet was about 3 kilometers away from the Diyarbakır airport, the military said in a statement.

The pilot received no injuries and successfully ejected prior to the crash. It was not immediately clear why the plane crashed, the statement added.

Commercial flights to Diyarbakır are being rerouted to nearby airports as.

Diyarbakır is home to a major military air base, the 8th Main Air Base Command.
