Drama of 'cupboard family' ends

A family of five, who made the headlines for living in a cupboard after they were evicted from their house because they failed to pay the rent, has finally found help from the state.

Local authorities accommodated them in a hotel while the government pledged to find them a new house and a permanent job for the father.

Veysi Hurma, 34, a junk collector in the southeastern city of Şanlıurfa, was evicted from his rental home after he failed to pay the rent due to unemployment.

Inspired by a popular Turkish movie about a man building his own mobile home, Hurma installed wheels on a 2-square-meter cupboard and called it home for his wife and three children.

The cupboard barely accommodated their few possessions and three children. Hurma's ingenious way to escape bills soon caught the attention of the media as well as a minister who also serves as a lawmaker in Şanlıurfa.

Food and Agriculture Minister Faruk Çelik visited the family and promised to find them a new home and a job for Hurma.

The local municipality has since hired the father and the family was offered accommodation at a hotel until they find a proper home.
