Newspaper, magazine circulation in Turkey decreases 20 percent in one year

The overall circulation of newspapers and magazines in Turkey decreased by 20 percent in 2016 compared to the previous year.

According to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat) Wednesday, the total circulation of newspapers and magazines decreased to 1.7 billion copies, with newspapers making up 94.1 percent of this number.

The number of newspaper and magazine titles in Turkey decreased by 7.9 percent to 6,265. Magazines constituted 59.7 percent of the total number of publications. The decrease was accelerated by measures taken against the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) after the July 15 coup attempt, which ushered in the discontinuation of dozens of national and regional newspapers funded by FETÖ.

According to the figures, 90.7 percent of the newspapers in operation were local, 6.6 percent were national and 2.6 percent were regional publications. Meanwhile, national newspapers held 82 percent of the circulation share, followed by a 16.5 percent share of local and a 1.5 percent share of regional newspapers.

For magazines no longer in circulation, 54.8 percent were published on a national scale, followed local magazines with 39.3 percent and regional magazines with a 5.8 percent share. Overall national magazines made up 71.6 percent of circulation, followed by 24.3 percent of local and 4 percent of all regional publications.

Official figures show 6.6 percent of the newspapers published in 2016 were national that held 82 percent share of the total annual newspaper circulation. The remaining 18 percent of newspaper circulation were local and regional newspapers.

TurkStat also said 90 percent of total annual newspaper circulation was daily newspapers while 56 percent of the total annual magazine circulation was monthly magazines.

On the content side, 86.9 percent of newspapers had political/news/actual content while 2.9 percent had sector-specific/professional content while 2.1 percent had local administration content, it said.

The top three weighted kind of content for the magazines published in 2016 were sector-specific/professional content (18.1 percent), academic content (13.3 percent), and education/examination content with a share of 7.6 percent.

TurkStat data also revealed that the number of newspapers and magazines published in both Turkish and English languages was 770, while there were 10 newspapers plus 90 magazines published only in English language.
