Number of juveniles pushed into crime, victims up


Figures released by the state-run Turkish Statistical Agency (TurkStat) yesterday show the number of juveniles pushed into crime slightly increased. Statistics regarding the number of children brought to security units either as a victim or as a perpetrator of crime show a 10 percent increase last year compared to 2015.

The overall number of children involved in crimes or becoming victims increased 10 percent in 2016 and rose to more than 333,000 people. 54.8 percent of these children were in the age 15-17 age group.

Both as victims and perpetrators, boys made up the majority of juveniles brought to security units.
