A group of Turkish students claimed the gold medal for free-style category of a robotics contest in China by creating a brain-powered wheelchair, reports said Tuesday.

Sponsored by Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ATSO), the team participated in the Robot Challenge 2017, which took place in Beijing.

Designed with the disabled people in mind, the brain-powered wheelchair aims to provide accessibility for those with paraplegia. The project works through the use of a head device which allows the disabled person to control the wheelchair through sensors detecting signals sent by the brain.

The head of ATSO Davut Çetin said that there were around 2,000 participants with 96 projects in the free style category, submitted by 50 countries.

The Turkish team consisted of three members, including the 16-year-old Buket Naz Zeren, Eren Ekrem Kallıkçı and 10-year-old Efen İnan.

Çetin also said 'investing' in the youth means investing for the future.
