Police in Istanbul cracked down on a cockfighting ring in the city's Sultangazi district.

Nine cocks were saved from certain death, while two men who owned the secret place where cockfights were held were fined for gambling and mistreatment of animals.

Cockfighting, an ancient sport banned in many countries, is prohibited in Turkey for the cruel treatment of the animals that usually end up dead in violent fights.
