Turkey is among the highest risers in the Human Development Index released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Friday. The country scored 64th place among 189 countries in the index that looks into multiple aspects of development, from gender equality to life expectancy.

The latest figures show Turkey made 36.6 percent progress in development in the past 27 years. The average life expectancy increased 11.7 years between 1990 and 2017 and years of education rose 3.5 years. Gross national income per capita showed about a 121.2 percent rise in the same period.

In terms of gender equality, Turkey scored 69th place among 160 countries in 2017 with 14.6 percent of lawmakers in the parliament being women, a 44.05 percent rate of schooling among adult women who graduated from at least middle school, and a workforce participation rate of 32.4 percent for women.

Niger is at the bottom of the Human Development Index, while Norway tops the index.
