A new 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Kahramanmaraş province in central Türkiye following this morning's deadly earthquake that killed at least 1,000 people and wounded over 7,000, the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said Monday.

The agency said the most recent earthquake took place at 1:24 p.m. local time and was centered in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş. Rescue teams quickly flocked to the area.

According to preliminary reports, the most recent earthquake was felt as far as away the northwestern province of Sakarya, which is over 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the epicenter, and in the capital Ankara, as well as in many other provinces. Citizens who felt the earthquake took to the streets.

Strong tremors were reported in Osmaniye, Şanlıurfa and Diyarbakir, areas that were already heavily damaged by the 7.7 quake early in the morning.

Poor weather conditions and rain are said to be making rescue efforts difficult at the moment.

Following the second tremor, the AFAD reported that there was no tsunami danger in the Eastern Mediterranean.

"After the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş, Pazarcık and Elbistan today, there is no tsunami threat that will affect our coasts in the Eastern Mediterranean as of now," the post made on AFAD's social media account said.
