Eight students were injured in a fight at a middle school in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district on Monday, with one student in critical condition.

The fight broke out among students at Kayaşehir Sheikh Shamil Imam Hatip Middle School for an undetermined reason, according to initial reports.

Police and medical teams were dispatched to the school following a report of the incident. The injured students were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Istanbul’s Governor’s Office said an investigation into the incident has been launched, initial reports show that a female student from another school entered the school wearing a school uniform and stabbed students indiscriminately.

The attacker, who lives in the same neighborhood and near the school, was detained by police, Gül said.

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu said eight injured students were receiving treatment, including one in critical condition and two in moderate-to-severe condition.

"We are closely monitoring their health,” Memişoğlu said, extending his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured students and their families.
