Two PKK terrorists killed in western Bolu province

Two PKK terrorists have been killed in a security operation conducted by police units and a special operations team in the northwestern Bolu province, security sources said yesterday.

In the operation, security forces raided the fifth floor of an apartment in Paşaköy late Wednesday and killed a terrorist while one police officer was slightly injured.

In the clashes, security forces also killed another terrorist on the roof of a building and confirmed early Thursday that the operation was successful.

Senior leaders of the PKK have repeatedly threatened to hit targets across Turkey and stated that their aim is to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government.

"If Erdoğan eliminates us, he wins. We want to topple Erdoğan and the AKP [AK Party]. Turkey will never be a democratic country unless Erdoğan and AKP are toppled," Cemil Bayık, a senior PKK leader said in an interview with the Times. The interview was conducted four days before the second attack in the capital Ankara that killed at least 37 people.

He said: "Until not long ago, the war with the Turkish army was only in the mountains. Then it spread to towns and provinces. It will be everywhere now," he said, adding that any kind of order given to terrorists would be "legitimate."

Also on Feb. 22, senior PKK leader Duran Kalkan openly uttered threats against the Turkish state and asserted that the bombing attacks might number "a thousand, not just one," in the upcoming period.

Furthermore, pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, whose party is accused of having close links to the PKK, including being involved in terrorist recruitment, previously implied in his speech in September that the PKK's war in Turkey's southeast might spread to the Western provinces.

"My brothers who live in the West, if we are silent about Cizre [in the southeastern province of Şırnak], if we do not pour into the streets, believe it or not, this fire will burn everywhere. Do you think that Bodrum is too far from Cizre? It is not. Everywhere is close," he said.
