Bahçeli: MHP will continue supporting gov't in anti-PKK fight

During his party's meeting in Parliament yesterday, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli said his party will support the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government if it sincerely continues its fight against terror.

"As long as the AK Party government continues to fight against terror sincerely, observing conditions that have been specified, we are with them and we will not withhold our support. We will fulfill our utmost responsibilities."

He also highlighted that this fight should not be exploited and should continue until the last terrorist is captured with his or her gun.

In one of his previous speeches, Bahçeli had also said the government should urge citizens who live in areas where operations are occurring in the southeast to leave, so the scope of the operations can be extended. Prefacing that the MHP lends its full support for counterterror operations and always sides with the state and security forces, he said: "We prioritize all assessments about the historical right and interests of our state in perpetuity and with the security of our nation utmost among our concerns."

Regarding Turkish-EU relations, Bahçeli stressed that the EU's attitude toward Turkey lacks sincerity and is full of hypocrisy.

"The attitude of the EU toward Turkey is ambivalent and hypocritical."

Amid the intra-party conflict, a recent survey found that 55.2 percent of MHP supporters want current Chairman Bahçeli to stay as the party leader and 51 percent said that Meral Akşener, who has been accused of having links to the Gülen Movement, should be discharged from the party.
