High-ranking PKK terrorists responsible for car bomb attacks killed in operation
Security forces killed more than 10 PKK terrorists, including high-ranking group figures, in an operation on Wednesday in the Lice district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.
Security sources told state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) that the terrorists killed in the operation included high-ranking field operative Ekrem Güney, whose codename was "Azar Siser," and his aide Ahmet Talva, codenamed "Çektar." Güney was among the terrorists in the blue category, of those sought by the Interior Ministry.
Terrorists are categorized into different colors – red, blue, green, orange and gray – on the website of the Interior Ministry, with red indicating those considered most dangerous.
Both terrorists were on the Interior Ministry "most wanted" list. The terrorists are thought to have carried out car bomb attacks in the southeastern Dicle and Hani districts against gendarmerie command complexes, which killed two soldiers and injured more than 50 people, including civilians and family members of soldiers.
Güney was reported to have fought in 2014 in Kobani for the PKK terrorist organization's Syrian affiliate, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), whose armed wing is called the People's Protection Units (YPG).
Another terrorist killed in the operation was identified as Gülnaz Türk, a high-ranking executive in the PKK's women's military wing, the Free Women's Units (YJA).
Two bomb experts were also among the terrorists killed.
A statement by the Diyarbakır Governorate said that the operation was launched to neutralize the terrorist group that was responsible for the car bombs, as well as laying bombs and mines along the highway that connects the Diyarbakır and Bingöl provinces, attacking civilians and security personnel, restricting their freedom of movement, kidnapping civilians and setting civilian vehicles on fire.
Among the material seized from the terrorists was one machine gun, 10 long-barreled weapons, an assault rifle, pistol and ammunition, 14 grenades, night vision goggles, a bulletproof vest and helmet, a hand-radio to detonate explosives, two batteries, 43 detonators and 26 kilograms of cannabis.
