A week ahead of the July 15 failed coup attempt, Staff Colonel Mustafa Albay ordered Lieutenant Faruk Karaaslan to take military action and bomb the southeastern province of Batman due to a false intelligence reports of terrorist activity in the area. The reports said that PKK members were using a mine as a base and shelter. Karaaslan examined the area and did not find any evidence of terrorist activity near the mine and therefore disobeyed the order to bomb the area. The mine was, in fact, an active mine with 40 miners inside and no terrorists on the premises.

Staff Colonel Mustafa Ertürk was taken into custody and arrested in Konya in the wake of the July 15 coup attempt after officials learned that he had instructed FETÖ-member pilots at the third main jet base in the province of Konya to stand by for instructions to take off from the base.

The former commander of the Uludere Border Battalion and leader of the Gendarmerie Squadron, Hüseyin Erten, an alleged member of FETÖ, was also taken into custody for his role in the 2011 Uludere massacre. Abdullah Baysar, the 23rd Gendarmerie Border Division commander in Şırnak province, is also under investigation for connections with the FETÖ and the Uludere massacre. At the time of the massacre, Baysar was a brigade commander in the town of Şenoba in Uludere and was promoted to his current rank in the army in 2014. Previous reports from Turkish media outlets indicated that he had quarrels with local victims of the Uludere incident.
