1,389 pro-coup soldiers, including Erdoğan's military aide, discharged in major Turkish military overhaul

A statutory decree issued by the Cabinet and released online by the Official Gazette on Sunday makes major changes in Turkey's military structure following the bloody July 15 coup attempt launched by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ).

Some 1,389 pro-coup soldiers, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's military aide, were discharged from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). Those discharged include Erdoğan's chief military aide, Colonel Ali Yazıcı, Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar's aide-de-camp, Levent Türkkan, and Defense Minister Fikri Işık's personal secretary, Tevfik Gök.

Out of the total 1,389 names discharged with the recent decree, 1,196 were serving in Turkey's gendarmerie forces, while 1,684 soldiers were discharged by a previous decree. Among the 1,684 discharged soldiers, 149 generals and admirals were discharged from the TSK due to their links to FETÖ by governmental decrees. According to the second governmental decree, which was announced after the declaration of the state of emergency last week, 87 generals, 726 commissioned officers and 256 sergeants were dismissed from the Land Forces Command.

Thirty generals, 314 commissioned officers and 117 sergeants were dismissed from the Air Force Command, and 32 admirals, 59 commissioned officers and 63 sergeants were dismissed from the Naval Forces Command. The discharged soldiers include former Chief of Air Staff Gen. Akın Öztürk and the former commander of the 2nd Army, Gen. Adem Huduti, who are both under arrest.
