One soldier was killed and six others were injured in Silvan district of southeastern Diyarbakır province on Monday as PKK terrorists opened fire on security forces carrying out field scanning.

Initial reports said that rocket-propelled grenades were used in the attack.

Back-up forces were dispatched to the area with helicopters after the attack, and an air-backed operation was launched in the area.

Renewed violence in Turkey has come in the wake of the July 20, 2015 Suruç bombing that was allegedly carried out by Daish and left dozens of people dead. The subsequent PKK-linked murder of two Turkish police officers in their homes sparked a new wave of conflict in the country.

Since then, PKK terrorist attacks have martyred more than 600 security personnel and also claimed the lives of numerous civilians, including women and children, while more than 7,000 PKK terrorists have been killed in army operations.

The Turkish government has intensified its counterterror operations following the recent attacks carried out by the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey.

Formed in 1978, the terrorist group waged a war against the Turkish government for an independent state until the early 2000s and then shifted its goal to autonomy in the predominantly Kurdish regions of Turkey.
