Eleven suspects were detained yesterday in Istanbul-based anti-terror operations against the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ).

The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office issued arrest warrants for 17 suspects accused of being part of the FETÖ network and operating as city "imams" (masters) for the terror group.

FETÖ uses the code name "imam," an Islamic title used to refer to religious leaders or clerics, as a title for the terror-cult members with major responsibilities, like dealing with specific organizations and institutions in Turkey and abroad.

So far, 11 of the 17 suspects have been detained by Istanbul's Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Department. Simultaneous operations in Istanbul, Ankara, Trabzon, Yalova, Kocaeli, Artvin, and Tokat continue.

On July 15, a small military junta linked to FETÖ attempted to topple the democratically elected president and government in Turkey and impose martial law. The attempt was prevented by military troops loyal to the government, along with police units and millions of Turkish citizens in favor of democracy.

The July 15 defeated coup left 248 people dead and 2,193 injured.
