Opposition leaders condemn Istanbul attack, call for unity against terror groups

Turkey's opposition party leaders have issued statements condemning the terror attack in Istanbul's Ortaköy neighborhood early Sunday, calling for a unified stance against terrorist groups.

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), issued a written statement on Sunday, saying the aim of the terror group was to disrupt daily life and that they will not succeed.

"Terror groups, which have targeted our daily lives directly, will not reach their goal of weakening our infinite trust and love for our country," Kılıçdaroğlu said.

The CHP leader added that terror groups will be defeated through social cooperation and Turkey's strong democracy.

Meanwhile, the opposition Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli on Sunday shared a message on his official twitter account, condemning the terror attack and called for more pressure on terror groups and a unified stance.

"It is certain that terror will not win, and it is sure that traitors and those who cooperate with them will not achieve their aim of destruction and disintegration," Bahçeli said in his statement.

Bahçeli added that a conscious of unity was necessary to tackle the problem that is terror.

The MHP leader said the aim of the terror groups is to destabilize Turkey's future, national unity and freedom.

"In reality, terrorists and terror groups are puppets. There are monstrous powers supporting them, making calculations over Turkey and the Middle East. Whatever they do, they will not be able to divide our nation and our country," he said.

The attack on the "Reina" night club in Istanbul's Ortaköy neighborhood, now claimed by Daesh, killed 39 people, and injured 65 others. An armed assailant opened fire on a crowd celebrating the new year and later escaped the scene.

Among the victims were seven Saudi Arabians, two Indians, one Canadian, one Syrian, one Israeli, two Moroccans, one Lebanese, one Belgian, four Iraqi nationals, and 15 Turkish citizens. A massive manhunt is underway to catch the assailant who is still at large.
