PYD oppresses rivals for political survival: Kurdish official

Fuad Aliko, a representative of the Syria Kurdish National Council (ENKS), which consists of Syrian opposition Kurds, stated that the recent shut downs of ENKS offices in PKK and Democratic Union Party (PYD)-controlled areas is the terrorist organizations' attempt to survive the political arena, while indicating that Russia is aiming to use the organization in Idlib against the al-Nusra Front.Aliko made these evaluations to AA concerning the PKK/PYD terrorist organizations during the fifth round of Syria talks held in Geneva. He said that ENKS offices in PKK/PYD-controlled areas have been closed down, saying: "Although the PYD is present in the field, takes support from Russia, the U.S., the Syrian regime and Iran, it is not a political actor. When you look at the region, you see that ENKS, despite the fact that it does not control any land, represents the Kurdish people in the political scene. The PYD is trying to be active in the political arena by pressuring ENKS."Indicating that he gave messages to U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Steffan De Mistura regarding the PKK/PYD, Aliko continued his speech, saying: "Yesterday, I told Mistura that the PYD is working in coordination with the regime. If they are in the regime delegation, they can come here, but if they are included with the opposition, they should first cut their relationship with the regime and act together with the revolution. Since the PYD will not be present here, their only political solution is to pressure us.""Since the PYD is governed by one center, does not have any Islamic concerns and does not fight against the regime, it serves the purpose of both the U.S. and Russia. The result of their partnership, however, is their confrontation with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Turkey. Neither Russia nor the U.S. would like to lose Turkey at the cost of the PYD. They are also trying to reach a balance between the actors, but it is not possible," said Aliko, while stating that the U.S. and Russia are competing to cooperate with the PYD/PKK.In regards to the claims that suggest Russia will establish a military base in Afrin under the control of the PYD, he said that in his opinion, Russia is trying to move the PYD to Idlib from Afrin, stating that just like the U.S., which used them against Daesh, Russia will use them against the al-Nusra front.
